The youth group of the new EAA (European Acoustics Association) Technical Committee on Acoustic Materials, the YAN (Young Acoustician Network) and the YRAM (Young Researchers in Acoustic Metamaterials) are organizing a joint event for young researchers (masters/PhD/post-docs) on the topic of acoustic materials on Monday, May 10, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM (CEST).

The program includes 6 accessible lectures to grasp different aspects of the topic including a brief historical overview and future trends in the community.

This Symposium on Acoustic Metamaterials is targeted to PhD candidates, Early Career Investigators  (i.e. researcher whose career spun less than 8 years since the date of the PhD) and aims at sharing new advances and breakthroughs as well as fostering the community of young researchers in the field of acoustic metamaterials. The second SAM will be organised around 6 different sessions comprising 20 min talks and plenary lectures.

Among others, addressed topics will be related to:

  • Acoustic/elastic metamaterials and phononic crystals,
  • Acoustic/elastic metasurfaces,
  • Non-reciprocal manipulation of acoustic/elastic waves,
  • Acoustic/elastic meta-devices based on transformation acoustics, parity-time symmetric acoustics, topological acoustics,
  • Novel physical concepts for harnessing acoustic/elastic waves,
  • New applications of metamaterial-based functional devices for acoustic sensing, cloaking, imaging, absorption, energy harvesting,
  • ...

Plenary speakers:

  •  list to be confirmed

Social activities:

Different social and dissimination activities will be organised during the symposium.

Facebook event will also been created and will be used to share/discuss with other participants.

About the 1st and 2nd editions of SAM

The 1st SAM was held in Xàtiva (Spain) from 7th to 9th November 2018, and was co-organized by YRAM, the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and COST Action DENORMS (CA 15225). It was the first YRAM action to foster the community of young researchers in the field of Acoustic and Elastic metamaterial. It brought together 70 people, mainly ECIs.

3 plenary lectures were given by Johan Christensen, Kestutis Staliunas, and Fabrice Lemoult and about 30 regular talks (conference booklet 2018). Apart from the scientific content, several social events were organised during the symposium such as cultural and historical visits (Xàtiva Castle, Modern Art museum), laboratory presentations and social dinners at local restaurants. These were received extremely positively by the participants.

On Thursday evening, Vicent Romero-Garcìa, helped by volunteers, animated a scientific popularization conference on Acoustics basics with a music band ACDX Dixie Xàtiva. The scientific concert, open to all Xatìva inhabitants, and espacially children, was a great success. The concert hall was fully booked.

The 2nd SAM was held in Ischia (Italy) from 9th to 11th October 2019, and was co-organized by YRAM, the University of Salerno and COST Action DENORMS. It brought together 70 people from around the world, of which many ECIs.

5 plenary lectures were given by Andrea Bergamini, Richard Craster, Jean-Philippe Groby, Jensen Li and Angela Madeo and about 30 regular talks (conference booklet SAM 2019). Apart from the scientific content, several social events were organised during the symposium such as cultural and historical visits (Ischia Castle, Naples Ancient Underground) and social dinners at local restaurants. These were received extremely positively by the participants.

On Thursday evening, Marco Miniaci, helped by volunteers, animated a scientific popularization conference on Acoustics basics through movies. The scientific event, open to all Ischia inhabitants, was a great success counting over a hundred participants.
